Dear Graham Families,

This week I visited every elementary classroom and talked to our students about safety here at school. I reviewed all our drills that we practice every year and answered any questions our students asked. I was very impressed with our students and the questions they asked. We will continue throughout the year to review and remind our children of the basic components of school safety without creating anxiety or worry in students.

We have completed 4 weeks of school. The effort that students and staff have put forward as we get back into the swing of things is greatly appreciated. Here at Graham School we use CHAMPS and PBIS structures to set expectations for our students. CHAMPS is a learning tool that provides a framework for setting expectations for learning. PBIS is a system that helps us set expectations for our students, as they move throughout their day. If you know the Falcon Four, then you know our positive behavior expectations. J

Each year the Graham Elementary School community comes together to support the Indian Prairie Education Foundation (IPEF) by taking part in the Naperville Half Marathon and 5K. We have had runners from our parent community, our students (in the Kids Run) and staff participate in race. We’ve also had several staff and Graham community members support the runners’ efforts by joining us in a Spirit Squad. Spirit Squads are groups of people from each building who cheer on the runners during the race. Graham has had a Spirit Squad for the last 3 years and has always placed as one of the top squads! Please consider joining us this year to help us continue this winning record!

This year we are changing things up and coming together at McDonalds to support our runners and our school as they run in the annual Naperville Half Marathon to benefit IPEF. We are asking all our Graham families and friends to reserve a bit of their time on Tuesday, September 17th from 4:30 – 7:30PM to come out to the “McTeacher” Night at McDonald’s (95th Street location) and enjoy a special evening. Teachers and staff will be in attendance ready to greet and serve our families. We hope to see you there.

IPSD World Café

On October 17th from 6:30 – 9PM the World Café Event will be happening. The theme this year is Understanding Student Perspectives: How to Become Allies and Advocates. It will be held at Waubonsie Valley High School and is by invite only. Please let me know if you are interested in attending or would like more information.

PD Wednesdays

On PD Wednesdays busses will pick up bus riders 10 minutes later and all children will enter the building at 9:05AM. The school does not provide student supervision at 8:50 am on Wednesday morning. Please do not leave your student unsupervised if you arrive before 8:50 am on PD Wednesday. All doors will open at 9:05AM.

Additionally, please be aware that the Crossing Guards do not arrive for duty until 8:45AM on regular arrival (M, T, TH, F) and 8:55AM on PD Wednesdays.

Thank you to everyone who is following the direction of our staff as they utilize the Car Rider Line to drop off or pick up their student(s). Please remember to pull all the way forward. This will enable us to fully utilize the lane and get everyone safely to their destinations. Please do not park on Thatcher, along the east side of the building to drop off or pick up. My motto for the Car Rider Line is “Safety before Convenience.” Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Third-Party Educational Programs

The following companies have rented space in our schools to offer an after-school educational program for students. v Traffic and Pedestrian Safety

Thank you for helping maintain a safe and sound environment for our students by always pulling forward, not leaving your car unattended and always using the crosswalk to cross through traffic. Following drop-off and pick-up procedures will help ensure a safe entrance and exit for all Graham students.

· The Car Pick-Up and Drop-Off Zone is the safest way to pick-up and drop-off your student before and after school. Please follow the direction of staff members in the pick-up/drop-off zone. In addition, please remember that it is illegal to use cellphones when in a school zone.

· Please remember to follow the traffic directions of our crossing guards and to fully stop at the stop signs.

Please do not park on Thatcher to drop off or pick up.

v Parking

School buses use the front parking lot for loading and unloading. Cars are not permitted in the front parking lot until all buses have loaded or unloaded. This time will be adjusted for ten minutes later on Wednesday mornings due to the late arrival. Please obey all traffic control signs and curb markings. There is NO PARKING on the right hand side of the circle drive due to fire code. If you have a student who needs assistance during drop off/pick up, please contact the main office for a front entry pass.

v No Dogs at Arrival and Dismissal

For the safety of our students, we ask that parents refrain from bringing dogs onto school property during arrival and dismissal time periods, when students are present. This is per the District 204 Handbook.

v Walkers and Bike/Scooter Riders:

It is important to note that students use the crosswalk with the crossing guard. Students and younger sibling are to walk their bikes/scooters when they are on school grounds. Additionally, we ask that you monitor the use of motorized scooters when students and parents are present.

Reminders and Requests:

When calling in your child’s attendance or late arrival, please call the 24 hour absent line 630-428-6900, option 3.
Please remember to include your child’s name and classroom teacher on a sticky note, when dropping off a forgotten item or bringing in lunch.
There are already items in the Lost and Found collection that are looking for ‘home’. If your child is missing an item, please feel free to come and look through the items.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend. The Graham Staff and I appreciate all you do in support of our students and Graham School.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel contact me at your convenience.
