Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is an optional program at Graham intended to help students become excited about reading. Our PTA is very supportive in helping us increase our number of tests with their financial support as well as their support with the Accelerated Reader store (bookworm exchange).

The students read books from the Accelerated Reader list. This list is now online and accessible by clicking the above link. It is very important that students are reading at the appropriate level. We want them to be challenged but not frustrated. AR books in Graham’s LMC have a yellow dot on the spine and a label on the inside cover indicating the reading level of the book and the number of points a student can earn.

After students read the book, they are ready to take a computerized AR test. The students earn points depending on how well they do on the test. Most tests have ten questions and the student must get at least six questions right to pass the test. Students may not retake a test so it is important that they take the test soon after reading the book before they forget important details. It is crucial to note that we don’t want the students getting 100% on each test. If this happens, they are not challenging themselves with their reading. They should be getting between 80% - 90%.

The students earn points when they pass their tests. For each point they earn, they will receive one book buck. Once a month the book bucks are distributed to the students and they are allowed to spend them at the rolling bookworm exchange that comes into their classroom.

If you have any questions about the AR program, you can ask the classroom teacher or class me in the LMC at 428-6908.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Nancy Cocconi
