Reading Incentives

We have several reading incentive programs here at Graham!

Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book AwardRebecca Caudill

Each year, Graham School has a Rebecca Caudill voting party. In order to be invited to our voting party, fourth and fifth graders must read at least three books from the following list. They take an Accelerated Reader test on the book. They show the test results to a staff member in the LMC and we give them a sticker to put on the poster in the LMC. The idea is to have fun reading some great books!

What is the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award?

The Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Award program is for Illinois fourth through eighth graders. The students read books from the reading list above. If they read at least three of the twenty titles, they can participate in the voting. At Graham School, we have a voting party in February. Students come to the LMC, vote, and have ice cream sundaes. Students from all over Illinois will be reading and voting. We send our vote tally in, and one winner is announced in March. The students get very excited about the program!

Who Was Rebecca Caudill?

Rebecca Caudill wrote books for children and young adults. She lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois for almost fifty years. Some books written by her are Tree of Freedom, Did You Carry the Flag Today, Charley?, Schoolhouse in the Woods, Susan Cornish, House of Fifers, and others. This award is in recognition of her literary contributions.

Graham’s Winter Reading Incentive Program

When: Beginning in January and Ending in March

What: An eight week program divided into four two-week segments, with each segment representing a base of a baseball diamond. When a student completes a segment they will advance to the next base. The goal is to “hit a home run”.

How: Teachers at the grade level choose the two week reading goal for their students.

Each student records the number of minutes read at home. Students return their forms every two weeks and their progress is recorded on a classroom poster. When the students “hit a home run” they will receive a ticket order form for a free ticket to a Kane County Cougar baseball game. The student also receives a concession voucher for a hot dog and soft drink at the game. On our game date, they will be honored during an on-field parade, and also receive their reward for reading.

This year we are very excited to have the Graham School chorus singing the National Anthem at the beginning of the game. It is always a fun Graham family night at the ball park.

Graham’s game dates for this year are:

  • Thursday, April 26th
  • Monday, May 14

Illinois Monarch AwardMale Monarch Butterfly Image: http://www.monarchwatch.org/biology/sexing.htm ; March 16 1999.

The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to Kindergarten - Grade 3 children and to symbolize the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. The program is open to all Kindergarten - Grade 3 age children in Illinois.

Click on the following link to see the latest Monarch list.

At Graham School, our classes have reading buddies. The students will be reading these Monarch books with their buddies and voting in the spring.
